Chores for 5 Year Olds

Chores & Responsibility · 4 min read

At five, a child can do far more than most parents expect, as long as the job is simple, visible and does not require reading. The goal at this age is not a tidy house. It is the identity of a helper.

Jobs that work well at five

Making their bed, putting toys in a box, feeding a pet with supervision, putting dirty clothes in the basket, wiping the table, carrying their own plate to the counter.

These all share a useful feature. A five year old can tell whether the job is finished without asking an adult.

Keep the list short

Two or three daily jobs is plenty at this age. A long list becomes a source of failure rather than pride.

Repeat the same jobs every day so they become automatic rather than a fresh negotiation each morning.

Use pictures, not words

A five year old may not read, but they can absolutely follow a picture list.

Photograph your child doing each job and use those images. It turns the list into something they recognise instantly.

Let them finish badly

A five year old making a bed produces a lumpy bed. Resist the urge to fix it while they are watching.

You can quietly redo it later, but in the moment, the completion matters more than the quality.
