Chores for 10 Year Olds

Chores & Responsibility · 4 min read

By ten, a child can genuinely contribute to the running of a household. Not in a token way, but in a way that actually takes work off your plate. This is also the age where chores start doubling as life skills.

Jobs that work well at ten

Doing their own laundry, cooking a simple meal with supervision, cleaning a bathroom, vacuuming, walking the dog, mowing a small lawn, looking after a younger sibling briefly.

Every one of these is a skill they will need as an adult. That is not a coincidence.

Give ownership of a whole area

Rather than a list of tasks, hand over a domain. The bathroom is yours to keep clean. That is different from being told to clean the sink.

Owning an area teaches planning, standards and follow through all at once.

Link chores to money properly

Ten is a good age for a real allowance with a keep, save, invest and give split.

It is also the age where extra jobs for extra coins start making sense, because the child can genuinely choose to earn more.

Let them plan, not just execute

Ask how they want to fit the jobs around their week. Let them decide the order.

Planning their own time is a bigger skill than completing any single task.
